In 2020 CEDAW recommended that Afghanistan grant women and men equal rights with respect to nationality under the new citizenship law being drafted, including the right to transmit it to their children. In Afghanistan proving relation to one’s father or grandfather is the method for proving one’s identity. Afghanistan’s 2025 report to CEDAW confirmed that women’s right to transfer nationality to their children continues to be denied in practice.
