Discrimination against LGBTQ+ parents

Georgian legislation does not officially recognise same-sex marriages or surrogacy agreements contracted abroad. Therefore, there is no clear procedure for registering a child born to a same-sex couple through surrogacy. Consequently, the birth registration process can remain incomplete or may be substantially hindered for children of same-sex couples. Additionally, in 2024 Georgia passed a new law explicitly barring adoption of a minor by anyone who is LGBTQ+. This blocks non-biological LGBTQ+ parents from having their parental filiation recognized.
