Syria

Religious discrimination

Syria’s Personal Status Code does not consider marriages between a Muslim woman and non-Muslim man valid. As a result, children born within interfaith marriages are not always recognized, nor registered. In both 2012 and 2019 the CRC expressed concern about this practice. In 2012, the committee recommended that Syria amend the Personal Status Code to recognize all mixed marriages. In 2019, the committee again recommended amending the Code to ensure children of Muslim mothers and non-Muslim fathers are recognized, registered and have access to birth registration documents.
