Lesotho
Consolidation of postcolonial state control over territorial borders and borderlands through birth registration
Lesotho received recommendations from the CRC in 2018 regarding birth registration, including strengthening birth registration efforts in remote communities. The CRC encouraged Lesotho to seek technical assistance from the UNHCR and UNICEF in the implementation of recommendations. Those organizations in particular have been playing a parastatal role in the determination of identity and belonging of people living in remote, rural, and border communities.
Promising Practices
In 2024 Lesotho reported to the CRC that with the support of UNICEF and the EU, mobile registration and citizen services centres provide registration of all vital events (births, deaths, marriages, and divorces), especially for the hard-to-reach rural areas.
