Gender inequality in women’s independent access to their own ID
Prior to 2011, women in Lesotho did not have equal independent acces to their own identity documents.
Promising Practices
In the 2015 UPR, Lesotho reported that it had removed obstacles to women having equal and independent access to their own identity documents. Lesotho achieved this by adopting a 2011 National Identity Cards Act, which allows women to apply for identity documents without the authorization of their husbands.
