Algeria
Gender + religious + ethnic discrimination
In Algeria, the Amazigh experience ethnic discrimination when seeking to register their children. The Imazighen, formerly known as Berbers, make up approximately one-quarter of the population of Algeria. Both the CRC (2012) and CERD (2017) expressed concern about registrars refusing to record Amazigh baby names on birth certificates. In the 2017 UPR cycle both committees reiterated these concerns, as civil registrars in certain wilaya communes had refused to register Amazigh first names on the grounds that they did not appear on the list of Algerian first names.
