Discrimination against LGBTQ+ parents
In Bolivia, transgender birthing parents face barriers to obtaining accurate birth certificates for their children. In the 2025 UPR, Bolivia received a recommendation to ensure that all children, regardless of the gender identity or sexual orientation of their parents, are registered immediately after their birth and issued with an official birth certificate. There is not a legal procedure for registering children born to transgender parents. Birth certificates only include the mother’s and father’s information, thus ignoring the situation of transgender people capable of becoming pregnant. This means that, for example, a transgender man who carries a pregnancy must be listed as the child’s mother. Those facing these challenges have been compelled to register as mothers using their previous female-coded names. Some individuals, with legal assistance, have been able to rectify this information.
