Blocked access to reproductive healthcare
In the Dominican Republic, Haitian descended women face maltreatment in hospitals, which hinders access to reproductive care. Migrant women also fear deportation if they seek care, as migration control operations have taken place in hospitals as noted by the CRC (2023). These mothers may avoid formal healthcare settings as a result. As most birth registration occurs within hospitals in the DR, this poses obstacles to registration. It also makes proving a child’s place of birth more difficult, creating an additional obstacle to registration. CEDAW (2013) and CERD (2008) both issued recommendations regarding Haitian migrant women’s access to healthcare.
