Discrimination against LGBTQ+ parents
Greece recognizes civil partnerships for same-sex couples. However, information submitted to the CRC in 2020 by the Greek National Commission for Human Rights indicated that when children are born abroad and registered as children of two Greek same-sex parents, they were not granted a Greek birth certificate and thus were effectively deprived of their right to Greek nationality. Such cases did not always end in statelessness, but the obstacles to obtaining or transcribing birth certificates and confirming nationality may have generated a risk. They also faced increased vulnerability and lack of access to rights, including family reunification. In 2022 the CRC recommended that Greece establish legal safeguards to prevent statelessness among children born to same-sex couples and facilitate their access to Greek citizenship.
Promising Practices and Updates
In 2024 Greece adopted a bill that grants marriage and adoption rights to same-sex couples. It also fully recognises all marriages and family ties of children who were born abroad to same-sex parents.
