In Guatemala, cases of births to underage mothers must be reported to authorities. This may deter mothers from seeking registration for their children due to the fear of criminal investigation or retaliation against the father. Child marriage, which has been illegal since 2017, and incestuous sexual violence are driving factors of births to underage mothers. CEDAW (2023) noted these phenomena with concern, and recommended increasing girls’ and adolescents’ access to registration offices.
