Lebanon
Babies born to nations without states
In Lebanon, the documentation situation of Palestinian parents makes it impossible for them to register the births of their children. In this way, Palestinians have seen their precarious status transferred to their children. Identity documentation is required for proving their residence in Lebanon, for registering births, marriages and deaths, and for other essential purposes. Since 1948 Lebanon has admitted a large number of Palestinian refugees displaced by Israel. Many sought refuge in Lebanon without identity documents, or did not register their children born in Lebanese territory. As of 2016, at least 3,000 Palestinian refugees had no official identification documents because they arrived in Lebanon after the Palestine Liberation Organization was expelled from Jordan in 1971.
