Morocco
Gender + religious + ethnic discrimination
In Morocco, civil registrars have disallowed birth registration of Amazigh names. A 2022 submission to the UPR noted that civil servants allegedly continued to refuse registration of Amazigh names. They recommended eliminating all forms of racial discrimination against Amazigh people and Amazigh identity, respecting the right to the legal personality of Amazighs, and lifting all forms of prohibition of Amazigh first names.
Promising Practices and Updates
The Moroccan Ministry of Interior called on its civil status officers to adopt flexibility in processing applications for Amazigh names submitted. Morocco passed a law in 2019 confirming Tamazight as an official language.
