Blocked access to reproductive healthcare
Romani women in North Macedonia face barriers to accessing reproductive healthcare, including living in rural areas, being undocumented, lacking health insurance, or lacking the financial means to give birth in hospitals. Many Roma women choose to give birth at home as a result, leading to lower birth registration, as there is additional documentation required to register a baby born outside of a hospital.
In 2022, the CRC noted there had been an increase in general pre- and post-natal healthcare coverage in North Macedonia. However, concerns were raised about declining funding for healthcare.
Promising Practices and Updates
In 2018, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy proposed a healthcare program with a special focus on Roma women to help increase birth registration.
