Marital status discrimination

In Oman, children born out of wedlock face obstacles to registration. In 2015, Oman reported to the CRC that it had amended its Civil Status Act in 2012 to allow for birth registration of children born out of wedlock. Oman specified that, once the proper form has been completed, an ‘illegitimate’ child is granted a four-part name and attached to a particular tribe. Whether a single mother would be willing to fill out such a form is highly doubtful, given that sex outside of marriage is criminalized in Oman. In a 2022 report to the CRC, Oman asserted that there was no discrimination against children born to unmarried parents. However, in 2023 the CRC expressed concern about the lack of information on the registration of births of children born to unmarried parents in Oman.
