Blocked access to reproductive healthcare

In the Republic of the Congo, Indigenous women and girls experience blocked access to reproductive healthcare. Due to mistreatment, Indigenous women and girls are much more likely to give birth at home, leading to low rates of birth-registration due to lack of awareness of the necessity of declaring births to civil authorities; As of 2012, 64.3% of Indigenous persons had no birth certificate. This puts Indigenous women and girls at higher risk of trafficking, abuse, and exploitation. Additionally, lack of birth registration makes it harder to prove identity and land tenure, putting the population at risk of displacement and land dispossession. As of 2024 the CRC continues to have concerns regarding low rates of birth registration.

Promising Practices

In 2019, the Republic of the Congo passed a decree on special measures for the granting of civil status documents to Indigenous peoples.
