Legal and administrative obstacles for foreign parents with precarious status
In Suriname blocked access to birth registration for children born to foreign parents has been an issue. The CEDAW Committee recommended in 2018 that the country remove any administrative barriers and discriminatory practices which may prevent their successful registration. In 2022 CERD recommended that Suriname adopt measures for ensuring that all people born in Suriname are registered and issued an official birth certificate. It also recommended that Suriname raise awareness on programmes and campaigns on the importance of registering the birth of all children, including children born to migrant workers in both regular and irregular situations.
