Politicized birth registration practices as part of conflict / contests over territory
In 2023, the CRC noted that children of parents facing terrorism-related charges whose nationality has been withdrawn may be at risk of statelessness. The failed coup attempt in July of 2016 resulted in several laws being changed in Türkiye, including the addition of a new clause in the penal code that enables the government to withdraw citizenship of individuals suspected of crimes against the government or membership in an armed terrorist organization. The Committee recommended that the government repeal all legislation and practices that deprive newborns and children if their parents are accused or convicted of terrorism-related charges, and to provide remedies to the children who have already been affected.
